History – Västerås Konserthus

The story of Västerås Konserthus starts in 1999 when the city of Västerås reviewed the municipal district´s schools and recreational facilities. It was decided to convert the old concert hall into a school auditorium …..??!!

The muses of music are personified in Västerås Stad, Aros Congress Center and Landstinget Västmanland who jointly paved the road for Västerås Konserthus. Västmanlandsmusiken was commissioned to fill the hall with activities. The political community was unanimous.

Hundreds of contractors, construction workers and entrepreneurs gave physical shape to the dream of a concert hall. In record time they raised the walls of the building that soon would be the gathering point of musical life. Old forged with new at a mysteriously low cost. Imagine so much costing so little!

Archus Arosia Arkitekter and acoustician Jan-Inge Gustavsson of Akustikon collaborated to create room for music, meetings and meals in a euphony and beauty that speaks for itself.

The Royal Family arrived for the opening and the sun shone brightly in the hearts of the people of Västerås. 5,000 guests attended the pompous ceremony. Then the doors were opened to admit the public. Västerås Konserthus enjoyed an incredible first season with over 40,000 visitors in little over three months - not counting the thousands who visited the building as lunch guests.

The musical programme was highly praised with something for all tastes during the opening week. The autumn programme continued in the same spirit. When it comes time to summarise the season, the figures show that ninety-five events were held in Västerås Konserthus – in ninety-eight days!

The first season closed on 13 December and Västmanlandsmusiken’s employees could breathe a sigh of relief. They started afresh in January and when the musical year’s final concert was held in June 2003 over eighty thousand people had visited the 210 events organised since the opening of the Konserthus.

The story continues. Never to end, hopefully.
